Songs to stay awake to

Sleep.

We all love it, yet we never get it.

Especially me, because I’m a psychopath and I view staying awake as a challenge.

Sometimes we can’t afford to sleep.

We might have homework to do, tests to study for, papers to write or even a drive to make.

God I hate my commute.

Sometimes falling asleep means defeat, and sometimes it can mean much worse, so we put on some specific songs to keep our brains on Life Support.

Batting leadoff, we’ve got Joey Kinney.

“Last semester I had this big, long paper. The ‘Gold’ album from ABBA got me through that,” he said.

Ok, I see you. Putting me through the ‘Mamma Mia!’ soundtrack is a solid way to start.

The majority of these songs are pretty upbeat, like: “Honey, Honey,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen.”

Classics.

His favorites are “SOS,” “The Winner Takes It All” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”

Big fan.

But, despite being iconic, some songs like “The Winner Takes It All,” don’t do it for me in this scenario. The whole feel of a slow ballad doesn’t exactly kick away the drowsiness in my brain.

“I’m big into country. Johnny Cash has some upbeat songs that I like,” Kinney said.

I sure hope he does, because I don’t know if I like where we’re going.

To my surprise, the “Silver” album isn’t bad.

It’s just that Johnny Cash’s voice is so dry and dull that it doesn’t do it for me, but some of them have a solid beat.

Now up to the plate, a reserved Media and Communication student who preferred to stay anonymous, but obviously has great musical tastes.

She named “Hall of Fame,” by The Script.

Ooooh an early-2010s classic.

The opening piano is so clean, and the lyrics are so motivational.

And the pounding drums as he screams “STANDING IN THE HALL OF FAME!” gives me chills.

Let’s see what’s next.

“I like this group called The Score,” she said.

Hold up…

I need to control myself, because I will 100% go into full fan-boy mode.

The Score is easily my favorite current group. Definitely in my top-5 all time. I just saw them in concert on Tuesday and I am not ashamed to admit my obsession with their music.

They’re a very small group, but they’re arguably the inspiration behind this whole series.

Although their new stuff is great, the songs she suggested are from their first album, “Atlas.”

The lyrics are peak motivation.

You feel the drums in your chest.

And those backing chants are heavenly.

I could talk for days.

“Unstoppable” is great for getting jazzed up, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“Miracle” is literally my homework anthem.

“I’m losing my mi-i-ind, tryna find the perfect li-i-ine, think i’m runnin’ out of ti-i-ime, I need a mira-miracle.”

The pounding drums in “Oh My Love” will physically keep you from dozing off.

And then the cherry on top – “Legend.”

I can’t recommend them enough.

End of fan-boying, I’m very sorry you had to witness that.

That’s all from me, folks. I’m gonna try to get some sleep.

Psych!

I’m a college student. What even is sleep? I’m putting my brain on Life Support.
