Spartans sports at a glance

The Spartans women’s rugby team opened the season with a win against New England College, which equaled their win total for the entirety of last season.

Although the team was unable to secure a victory in their second game last Sunday, things are looking better for the Spartans.

Splitting the competition into three 20-minute games, the Spartans won two and drew the third. Freshman Aubrey Tetlow scored her first collegiate try, while sophomore Mikaela Phillips had a try of her own to double the lead of the first game.

The Spartans are now 1 – 1 on the season, and will return to action against Molloy on the road this Saturday at 10 a.m.


Men’s Cross-Country


Junior Gannon McKearin was the first of three Spartans to finish in the top 10 of the Castleton Invitational last Saturday. McKearin finished two tenths of a second behind the first-place finisher freshman Torey Vater from New England College.

Senior Jared Wheeler and Freshman Dylan Lupian were the other two Spartans to finish in the top 10. McKearin finished with a time of 27:33 placing second overall. Wheeler finished with a time of 28:05, finishing fourth overall, and Lupian finished sixth overall with a time of 31:22.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they travel to UMass Dartmouth to take part in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.


Women’s Cross Country


Senior Kaylyn Crompton finished first overall in the Castleton Invitational to help lead the Spartans to a first-place team finish.

Crompton outpaced the rest of the field and secured a first-place finish for the third time in her collegiate career at this event. Crompton finished with a time of 21:50.

The first four women to finish the race were Spartans. Freshman Giselle Rainville, junior Lydia Maier, and freshman Birgit Kinneberg rounded out the top four.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they travel to UMass Dartmouth to take part in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.


Women’s Tennis


After winning their first match of the season, the Spartans lost their next two. Their latest match was a Little East Conference matchup against Salem State.

Senior Emily Miller, sophomore Regina Marchese, and junior Aliza Bogner were the three Spartan victors against the Vikings of Salem St.

Castleton women’s tennis is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Bridgewater St. for LEC action.




The Spartans earned first place in their first tournament of the new season on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Castleton joined SUNY Canton, NVU-Johnson and Gordon College in participating in this year’s NVU-Johnson Invitational at the Jay Peak Resort Golf Course.

Sophomore Nicholas Ojala topped the field shooting 76 – 76, ending with a score of 152.

Junior Tripp Norris finished third overall for the Spartans with a two-day score of 157, and Senior Jacob Erwin finished fourth with a two-day score of 159.

Castleton golf returns to action tomorrow, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. for the MCLA Trailblazer Invitational.
