Get your game on, CU

Hello Castleton! At this point you’ve probably heard about one of the many new club teams coming to campus, the Esports Club Team. And as such, I’m guessing there have been some mixed responses to the idea, and on top of that, a lot of questions. In this column, I’m going to try and answer as many of those I possibly can.

To put it in literal terms, esports, is competitive gaming. Teams will sit at computers and compete in a myriad of different titles. The genres of the games played vary from first-person shooter to online card games.

The biggest comment I get about this club and esports in general is, it isn’t a real sport. If I’m being totally frank, it doesn’t matter how you classify it. Real sport, fake sport, somewhere in-between sport, none of those titles really change anything.

At the end of the day, esports is a multi-billion dollar industry, which is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. Thus, it’s only a matter of time before the NCAA or somebody else capitalizes on the possibility of collegiate esports.

That’s why I am hoping to make this club successful on our campus. I think it would be of great use to the university to get ahead of the trend. It would benefit us financially, while also having the potential to bring new students to the campus who may have potentially glossed over us to begin with.

One important note about esports is that much like any other form of team competition, they advocate and emphasize good communication, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Many games require on the fly decision making, and the ability to make quick decisions is a quality that can’t be underappreciated. Some of the games also help train your reaction times to be better, with some of the best players in the world having reaction times hovering around .1 second.

I think the biggest point I want to make about this club, is it’s just a fun space for people who enjoy competitive gaming to hang out. More than anything, I want this club to be a place everyone can come hang out and talk about Fortnite, League of Legends or whatever game they play. If you’re interested in the club feel free to contact me at john.culpo@castleton.edu.
