Sports talk

Welcome to another year of Castleton State College athletics! I’m just as excited as all of you to see our athletes in action. After winning the North Atlantic Conference last year, look for the women’s soccer team to repeat as NAC champs this season. With nine returning starters, the Spartans are poised to only build off of last year’s success.

The men’s soccer team has been chosen to win the NAC this year with six returning starters from last year’s team. A lot of pressure is on them to live up to this year’s expectations.

Last year the football team exploded onto the scene, posting an impressive 5-4 overall record and a 5-2 record in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. The team is picked to finish fourth in the ECFC poll this year. With six new faces on the coaching staff and newly appointed head coach Mark Klatt, the team seems ready to surprise many people again this year. I see them being contenders to win the conference.

Men’s cross country has been picked to finish third in the NAC behind New England College and Lyndon State College. Lyndon, who has won the NAC championship in each of its three seasons in the conference, received seven first place votes. New England College received two.

The women’s cross country team did not receive the same love as the men’s team did however. They were picked to finish fifth while Husson and Lyndon were picked to finish tied for first in the NAC.

On a national note, football is back and I know how excited we all are for the upcoming season after the lockout. My prediction for Super Bowl XLVI is the Patriots over the Packers 21-17.
