Men’s lax destroys Thomas 24-2
Castleton State College freshman Zach Davidson scored 11 goals and dished out one assist to lead the Spartans to a 24-2 win over Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference East Division men’s lacrosse quarterfinal action on Friday.
Davidson set two program records with his performance. With his fifth goal in the game, he set a new single-season record for points in a season with 71. Then, with his tenth goal, he set a new single-game goal scoring record previously set by Geoff Simons in 1999.
“He is a great player and has an ability to not always be the ‘man’,” coach Bo McDougall said. “He understands that he is just another piece of the machine.”
Davidson got the scoring started with 12 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Thomas was able to match with eight minutes to go on a goal from Gunnar Shleton, but Castleton ended the period scoring three goals with Davidson, Alex Green and AJ Groot each scoring one.
Castleton took control in the second quarter, recording eight goals, including four by Davidson. As they went into halftime the Spartans had a commanding 12-1 lead.
In the third quarter, Castleton reeled off eight straight goals with three coming from Davidson.
In the fourth quarter, Castleton put in four more; two from Davidson, to bring his total to 11 for the game, before Thomas finally answered on a goal by Matt Davis with 1:33 left in the contest to finish out the scoring at 24-2.
“Everyone on offense is getting to their spots, stepping in for shots and moving the ball well,” Davidson said. “It is essential because of where we are in our season; things are clicking at the right time.”
Green put in three goals and also added three assists, while Groot scored five goals in the win.
Eric Horsfield stopped five shots on the game to improve to 9-5 on the season.
With the win, Castleton improves to 10-7 and advances to the semifinal round of the NAC East Division tournament where they will face Husson for a chance at a berth in the finals.
“There is a fine line between confidence and over-confidence in sports,” McDougall said. “And I feel we are right where we want to be.”
