Men’s basketball splits weekend in MAine

The men’s basketball team was in Maine over the past weekend to play Maine-Maritime and Husson University in consecutive nights.

The Spartans defeated Maine-Maritime on Feb. 3 by a score of 77-58 to sweep the season series between the two teams.

Castleton had two players in double digits.

Mark Comstock finished with 11 points, and Greg Hughes finished with 10, going three for five beyond the arc. David Cochrane also had a good game, grabbing eight rebounds and adding seven points in the victory.

“We did what we needed to do to win,” Coach Paul Culpo said of the victory.

The very next day the Spartans played Husson, losing 96-78.

The Spartans had trouble putting the ball in the hoop the whole game, only shooting 35 percent from the field.

Matt Cooney, who scored a team-high 12 points and added four rebounds, had himself a good game, while Logan White had 11 points. Dammy Mustapha also played well in the loss, scoring six points and a team high eight rebounds.

“We didn’t play well,” Culpo said. “They played very well; it was just their day, not ours.”

Castleton is near the top of the conference standings for the third year in a row, and Culpo is confident in his team’s ability to play down the stretch and into the postseason.

“I like our chances in the postseason,” Culpo said. “The key for us is just having the willingness to believe in ourselves.”

The Spartans’ next game is Feb. 11th at home against Green Mountain College.
