Spartans sweep SUNY Canton
Team sits at 16-14 and is gearing up for a playoff run
The Castleton softball team swept its doubleheader against SUNY-Canton on Wednesday, giving the Spartans some momentum as they look to close out conference play throughout these last four games.
Castleton took an early lead in the first game of the double-header, scoring four runs in the first inning. Graduate student Hannah Mosher, junior Allison Almond, junior Madison Wilson, and freshman Samera Rideout led the charge with those four early scores.
Mosher then started the second inning off with a bang, hitting a solo home-run to help extend their lead. Her solo homerun was her fourth of the season, ranking her fourth among the LEC conference leaders. She finished the game going 3-3 with three RBIs.
The Spartans managed to double their run total in the second inning, making it a comfortable 8-0 score. After a commanding start, the Spartans decided to go deeper into their bench giving underclassmen and others an opportunity to play.
Coach Eric Ramey was impressed with the dominance shown early on and said it allowed him to see the potential of his team.
“Some of our younger kids who haven’t been getting a lot of opportunities proved that they’ve been working hard in practice because they got some chances yesterday. And I thought they performed well on both the offensive and defensive side,” Ramey said.
According to Ramey, the team feeds off of each other’s success creating an inspiring culture.
“Our core group did a great job of getting us going and it’s important for our younger kids to play off of experienced kids because it puts pressure on the opposing team,” Ramey said.
Freshman Kayliegh Osterhaudt tallied her first career RBI in the third inning helping the Spartans tack on another run, on the way to a 15-0 mercy-rule win.
The second game of the doubleheader looked eerily similar to the first game with the Spartans posting another mercy-rule win.
Allison Almond got things started in the first with an RBI single that brought Mosher in for a score. Samera Rideout tallied an RBI double to left center field, which led to an Almond score. Also scoring were Samera Rideout and Miranda Fish from an RBI double from Kayleigh Osterhaudt.
After going scoreless in the second inning, the Spartans scored seven runs in the third inning to break this game wide open, with key contributions from inexperienced players like freshmen Jordan Hill and Amanda Vaughn.
The team as a whole really appreciated all the good that happened because everyone typically doesn’t get these opportunities. Freshman Samera Rideout loved every moment of Wednesday’s game.
“I like how everybody who got a chance to pitch in and help with the win on offense and defense. We all pulled through for the team at one point or another and it was nice to see,” Rideout said.
SUNY-Canton tried putting together a rally that would help position them back in the game by scoring a lone-run in the fourth inning. But the Spartans hung tough, shutting them out and going on to win the second game of their doubleheader 11-1.
The Spartans look to make a late season surge in the LEC standings with upcoming doubleheaders against Southern Maine and Western Connecticut.
