C. Chadburn leads lady Spartans

Courtney Chadburn netted four goals for the Lady Spartans soccer team as it defeated Lyndon State College 6-0 at Alumni Field on Saturday. The Spartans improved to 4-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in North Atlantic Conference play.Chadburn set the pace early for the Spartans when she scored just over two minutes into the game on a turnover she had forced in Lyndon’s backfield. She tacked on her second goal nine minutes later on an assist from Emma Deis. Then, she knocked in her hat-trick goal with ten minutes left in the first half.

“I was just looking to put the shot on goal, by giving myself or my teammates an opportunity to finish,” Chadburn said. “When shots are put on goal, anything can happen.”

The Spartans didn’t lose any of their momentum during the second half.

Maria Arnot notched her second goal of the season with a shot from the 18 yard line.

The Spartans continued to pressure Lyndon with their offense, and in the 62nd minute, Chadburn broke Lyndon’s spirits with her fourth goal.

“Courtney is such an awesome player. Every time she gets the ball I know that it’s going to go in. She finishes every time,” said Kelly Gerken.

Chadburn is more modest, though.

“To be honest, I don’t keep track of my goals or stats,” Chadburn said when asked if she had ever scored four goals before. “What is most important to me is if we win the game no matter if I score or not.”

Gerken gave the Hornets one final swat as she scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 84th minute of play.

“I was so happy that I scored,” Gerken said. “I kept shooting and trying to get one the whole game and so I told myself to focus and finish the ball, and that’s what I did.”

Chadburn believes that this win will be a catalyst for the Spartans as they head into their next NAC games.

“It was important for us to get our first NAC victory especially at home in front of a great crowd of alumni, parents, and friends,” she said. “This win sets the tone for our next two conference games against Thomas and Maine Farmington next weekend.
