CU Spartans sports at a glance

 

Castleton Track and Field ended their 2019 season at the New England Division III Championships, sending three athletes to regionals.

Freshman Nate Gilcris had the highest finish for the Spartans, placing eighth overall in the men’s high jump by clearing a jump of 1.93 meters. Gilcris also finished third overall in at the Little East Conference championships, breaking his own school high jump record at 1.95 meters.

Senior Tayler Larmie represented Castleton at regionals in the hammer throw, finishing in 18th place. He will finish off his career with the school record in the hammer throw (46.63 meters).

Senior Ally Stearns also participated in the women’s hammer throw at regionals, placing in 18th overall as well with a distance of 36.74 meters.

At the Little East Conference Championships on April 27th, the men’s team finished in last and the women’s team finished eleventh out of 13.

Castleton will hope to improve in their second year in the Little East next season.

 

Men’s Tennis

 

Men’s tennis ended their season at home on April 27. against Bridgewater State, loosing the match overall 6-3. With this loss, the team ended with an overall record of 2-11, and a conference record of 0-7. Leading the team this season was Igor Almeida, finishing  his season with a 9-2 overall record in singles, and 4-5 with partner Jared Wheeler in doubles. Men’s tennis will return next spring, but first women’s tennis will hit the courts in the fall for their season!

 

Women’s Lacrosse

 

In what was a rough first year in the Little East Conference for the Women’s Lacrosse team, the Spartans look to focus on the positives of the season.

Finishing the season with an overall record of 6-12 and a 2-5 record in conference play, statistically the Spartans played very well this season.

With over eight hundred minutes played and one hundred and thirty-four saves, Senior Samantha Hebb was a solid force protecting the net for the Spartans.

Ranking seventh in the LEC and leading the Spartans in goals on the season with fourty-three was junior midfielder Emma Best. Reaching career highs in points, goals and assists, Best shined bright in her second year with the squad.

Leading the team in total points with fifty-four was junior midfielder Morgan Derosia. Derosia, who started in all eighteen games this season, recorded a career high 59.6 percent shot percentage.

Providing a large portion of the scoring for the Spartans was junior attack Erin Shuttle. With fifty points coming from forty-two goals and eight assists, Shuttle was dominant when on the field, despite a mission trip to Honduras with the Castleton Nursing program in the middle of the season.

The Spartans struggles continued as they dropped two games against UMASS Boston on Friday, May 3.

 

Baseball

 

With the losses, Castleton moved to 16-19 on the season, with an LEC record of 7-9. UMASS Boston now has a record of 26-10, and an LEC record of 13-3. The Spartans are still the sixth seed in the LEC.

The Spartans looked like they were turning things around over the last few games, winning three straight prior to their three straight losses.

Castleton lost both games against UMASS Boston with a score of 10-0 in each game. They were held to five hits through both games of the double-header, while the Beacons managed to get 34 hits.

Castleton pitcher Joe Gratton was on the hill for game one, throwing for four innings allowing four runs, three of them earned.

Game two of the double-header saw similar results. The Spartans did manage to get four hits, but they also managed to give up the same amount of runs.

Garrett Moran was the man on the mound for Castleton in game two, giving up seven runs, all of them earned, and allowed 13 hits.

The Spartans played their last regular season games of the year on Sunday, May 5 when they took on in-state rival Middlebury, defeating them 4-3. They will travel to Gorham Maine to take on Southern Maine in the first round of the LEC championships.

 

Men’s Lacrosse

 

The Spartans went 1-1 over their final two games, losing 17-10 to number two Plymouth State on April 23. and defeating Emmanuel 13-11 on April 25.

In the final game of the regular season, senior goalie Brandon Myron became Castletons all time saves leader with 478  career saves, breaking a record that has stood since 1998. He also became the fourth goalie in program history with 20 career victories.

Castleton lacrosse will return next spring.
