Get to know Finnish hockey player Anton Tarvainen

Anton Tarvainen is from Finland and a member for the Castleton men’s ice hockey team. The first-year student plays center on the team and sat down recently to chat about hockey and life in America.
Q. When did you start playing hockey?
A. I started playing when I was 4 years old.
Q. Who is or was a role model for you growing up?
A. I think the biggest role model in hockey has been my former coach and professional hockey player Petri Varis. Outside hockey, my parents.
Q. What’re your goals for the season, individually and team-wise?
A. Get better with every aspect of the game, and team goal to win as much as possible.
Q. How do you train and prepare for the season?
A. For me, the hockey season really doesn’t end. When the season ends you start to prepare yourself for the next season by training on and off ice.
Q. What is the biggest difference between the U.S. and Finland?
A. Biggest difference is small talk. We don’t have small talk back home, so that was a nice surprise when someone asks, ”how are you?” for example.
Q. What was the adjustment like moving to a different country?
A. For me the adjustment was pretty easy because of my great teammates, and I have lived abroad before because of hockey.
Q. What do you miss most about home?
A. The things I miss most from Finland is the sauna and Finnish homemade food along with all of my friends and family.
Q. Favorite food?
A. Sushi and smoked Salmon.
Q. Favorite movie/tv show?
A. Favorite TV show is “Game of Thrones” and movie would have to be “Moneyball.”
Q. Advice to aspiring hockey players?
A. Keep working hard every day, even if you are having an off day do your best and bounce back the next day
